Es dient dem Verwalten der für die Ahnenforschung nötigen Daten und unterstützt bei der Analyse und grafischen Ausgabe. Es ist in Python geschrieben und benutzt das GTK+-Toolkit sowie optional einige GNOME-Funktionalitäten und legt Wert auf eine klare Strukturierung der grafischen Oberfläche. Primär wird es für Linux entwickelt, ist aber auf anderen Betriebssystemen lauffähig. In GRAMPS können alle wichtigen Daten wie Personen, Familien, Ereignisse und Orte in beliebiger Anzahl verwaltet werden. Alle Angaben lassen sich mit beliebig vielen Quellen belegen, und diese auf Archive verweisen. Das Datenmodell basiert auf dem in GEDCOM verwendeten, ist jedoch nicht ganz kompatibel, insbesondere werden einige Einschränkungen aufgehoben. Die Daten werden intern in einer Berkeley DB gespeichert, für den Datenaustausch wird ein offenes XML-Format angeboten. Für einige andere Formate, wie zum Beispiel GEDCOM oder GeneWeb, existieren Import-/Export-Schnittstellen. Für die Ausgabe stehen mehrere textbasierte Berichte, ganze Webseiten sowie die Ausgabe grafischer Stammbäume und Ahnentafeln zur Verfügung. Über eine Plug-In-Schnittstelle können eigene Berichte in Python erstellt werden.

És una part del projecte de GNOME. Originalment estava només disponible als sistemes operatius de la família UNIX, però des de la versió 2.2.0 també està disponible per a Windows. GRAMPS permet construir fàcilment i el vostre arbre genealògic i mantenir-lo, també proporciona totes les característiques comunes d'altres programes genealògics, així com l'entrada d'informació directament. És possible canviar i manipular qualsevol esdeveniment de la base de dades sencera (en qualsevol ordre o seqüència) per donar suport a la recerca, anàlisi i correlació, així per exemple identificant lligams possibles entre individus. GRAMPS ha estat concebut amb el concepte que la majoria dels programes de genealogia estaven dissenyats per permetre a l'investigador entrar la informació relacionada amb un arbre genealògic particular. Normalment proporcionen recursos per a mostrar els avantpassats a la pantalla gràfica, amb diagrames, o informes. Les dades es poden ampliar amb imatges o altres mitjans.
