Das Programm ist in allen gängigen Linuxdistributionen enthalten. Es dient zum Beispiel Kooka, einer Scannersoftware unter KDE, als Back-end. GOCR erkennt einfache Texte recht gut, hält dem Vergleich mit kommerziellen Programmen jedoch nicht immer Stand. Es erkennt verschiedene Druckerschriftarten, ohne auf eine Datenbank zurückgreifen zu müssen, was die Anwendung besonders einfach macht. Neben reinem Text ist das Programm in der Lage, gängige eindimensionale Strichcodes zu dekodieren.
