The GMC Terrain is a new mid-size crossover SUV which replaced the body-on-frame GMC Envoy as the brand's entry-level SUV offering. In addition, the Terrain replaced the Isuzu Ascender (a rebadged GMC Envoy) because of Isuzu leaving the United States, and also the Theta-based Pontiac Torrent due to GM dropping the Pontiac brand. The Terrain slots below the Acadia as its smallest SUV. Like the preceding Envoy, the Terrain will not be sold in Mexico.

General Motors also sells the GMC Terrain as a rebadged Opel Antara in the Middle East, which shares the same Theta platform. Another version of this vehicle is sold in the United States and Canada as the Saturn Vue and in Mexico as the Chevrolet Captiva. The US version of the GMC Terrain, larger than the Middle East version, is based on the 2010 Chevrolet Equinox. The 2010 GMC Terrain debuted at the 2009 New York International Auto Show.
