- The G5 group of British universities refers to an unofficial group of five British universities that are known to generally dominate the top 5 positions in United Kingdom league tables, the most well-known of which are that of The Times, The Guardian and The Sunday Times. There are a number of parallels that can be drawn between the British universities represented in the G5 and those American universities and colleges represented in the Ivy League; this is especially true when such parallels relate to the academic reputations of the institutions. For this reason the G5 universities have sometimes been described in the US as the 'British Ivies'. Although it is presently unclear as to how widespread usage of this terminology is, indications are that acknowledgement of its value is growing. The phrase, which was originally coined by The Times Higher Education Supplement, has come into popular use with particular regard to top-up fees, funding and university exclusivity.
