He contested election to Maharashtra Legislative Assembly on congress ticket but lost. He is former director of Pratibha Mahila Sahakari Bank and Sant Muktabai Sahakari Sakhar Karkhana. Reserve Bank of India revoked the banking licence of Pratibha Mahila Sahakari Bank for financial irregularities.

It is alleged that in 2004 he in his capacity as nominated President of distrcit congress committee collected substantial amount on pretext of felicitation of her sister Pratibha Patil on her appointment as Governor of Rajasthan however he failed to account for the money. It is further alleged that G N Patil did not deposit the tsunami relief fund of Rs 1,89,105 collected by Congress workers in the Chief Minister's Relief Fund or Pradesh Congress Committee’s account, as was required.
