A front end processor (FEP) is a program or operating system component that allows computer users to enter complex characters and symbols, using a standard Western keyboard. The term FEP is generally used in a MS-DOS context. Other operating system may have a different name for same idea: for example, IME is generally used in a Microsoft Windows, Input Method for Mac OS, or XIM for X Window System.
