| - Friedrich "Fritz" Hartjenstein (July 3, 1905 - October 20, 1954) was an SS-Obersturmbannführer . Born in Peine, he began concentration camp service at Sachsenhausen in 1938. The following year, he was transferred to Niedernhagen. In 1941, he was assigned to the 3rd SS Division "Totenkopf", where he served for a year.In 1942, he was appointed the commandant of Birkenau, the death camp in Auschwitz. He was responsible for hundreds of thousands of gassings. In 1944, he was transferred to Natzweiler concentration camp and appointed commandant. He was subsequently transferred to Flossenbürg, serving as commandant. Hartjenstein's postwar fate consisted of many trials. First, he was arrested by the British and sentenced to life imprisonment on June 1, 1946, at Wuppertal for executing four French Resistance members. Then he was again tried by the British for hanging a POW who was a member of the Royal Air Force and sentenced to death by firing squad on June 5 of that year. He was then extradited to France where he was tried for his crimes at Natzweiler and sentenced to death. He died of a heart attack while awaiting execution on October 20, 1954. (en)

Puis il fut transféré au camp Flossenbürg, toujours à la fonction de commandant. Après la guerre, Hartjenstein dut répondre à plusieurs procès. Arrêté par les forces anglaises, il fut condamné à la prison à perpétuité le 1 juin 1946 à Wuppertal pour l'exécution de quatre résistants français. Il fut de nouveau jugé par la justice anglaise pour la pendaison d'un prisonnier de guerre qui était membre de la Royal Air Force; il est condamné à mort au peloton d'exécution le 5 juin de la même année. Il fut alors extradé en France pour y être jugé des crimes commis au Struthof, pour lesquels il fut de nouveau condamné à mort. - Friedrich Hartjenstein (ur. 3 lipca 1905 w Peine, zm. 20 października 1954 w Paryżu) - zbrodniarz hitlerowski, komendant obozów koncentracyjnych Auschwitz II - Birkenau i Natzweiler-Struthof oraz SS-Sturmbannführer. Służył w Wehrmachcie, skąd w 1938 przeszedł do formacji Waffen-SS. Dowodził kompanią wartowniczą w KL Sachsenhausen w 1938. W 1939 był komendantem obozu w Niederhagen-Wewelsburg. Od 1940 do 1942 służył w formacjach frontowych SS-Totenkopf. Był funkcjonariuszem Głównego Urzędu Administracji i Gospodarki SS . Podlegały mu sprawy zatrudnienia więźniów. We wrześniu 1942 Hartjenstein został skierowany do służby w kompleksie obozowym Auschwitz-Birkenau, gdzie początkowo do listopada 1943 sprawował funkcję dowódcy batalionu wartowniczego. Następnie od listopada 1943 do 8 maja 1944 był komendantem obozu w Brzezince. Stąd przeniesiono go na stanowisko komendanta obozu Natzweiler-Struthof, które piastował do lutego 1945. Po wojnie był sądzony trzykrotnie przez trybunały alianckie za zbrodnie wojenne. 1 czerwca 1946 został skazany na dożywocie przez brytyjski Trybunał w Wuppertalu za udział w egzekucji czterech członków francuskiego Ruchu Oporu. Następnie ten sam Trybunał skazał Hartjensteina na karę śmierci przez powieszenie w procesie załogi Natzweiler-Struthof 5 czerwca 1946. Wyroku nie wykonano, gdyż Hartjensteina ekstradowano do Francji. Francuski trybunał wojskowy w procesie załogi KL Natzweiler skazał go na karę śmierci przez rozstrzelanie. Hartjenstein zmarł w więzieniu w Paryżu w oczekiwaniu na egzekucję. (pl)
