Friedrich Stromeyer (1776 - 1835) was a German chemist. Stromeyer received his degree from the University of Gottingen in 1800. He was then on the staff of the university and was also an inspector of apothecaries. Cadmium is an impurity in zinc compounds, although represented in very small quantities. He was the first to recommend starch as a reagent for free iodine and he studied chemistry of arsine and bismuthate salts.

Ab 1818 war er Mitglied der Bayerischen Akademie der Wissenschaften Stromeyer analysierte und beschrieb viele Minerale, so unter anderem auch erstmals den Eudialyt sowie den Aragonit, Calcit (Isländer Doppelspat, Kalkspat), Aluminit, Magnesit, Pikropharmakolith (Picropharmacolit), Polyhalit, Vulpinit, Strontianit, Coelestin, Baryt (Schwerspat) und weitere, dokumentiert im Band 1 seines 1821 bei Vandenhoeck und Ruprecht erschienen Werkes Untersuchungen über die Mischung der Mineralkörper und anderer damit verwandten Substanzen.
