Friedrich Matthias Claudius was a German anatomist who was a native of Lübeck. He was related to the late German poet Matthias Claudius (1740–1815). In 1844 he earned his doctorate from the University of Göttingen, and in 1849 was appointed to the zoological museum at Kiel. In 1859 he became professor and director of the anatomical institute at the University of Marburg.

In 1859 he became professor and director of the anatomical institute at the University of Marburg. In an 1856 paper he described what were to become known as the "cells of Claudius", which are cells located on the basilar membrane of the inner ear's cochlea. His name is also associated with "Claudius' fossa", which is now referred to as the ovarian fossa, a depression in the parietal peritoneum of the pelvis.

In den Jahren 1848 bis 1850 betätigte er sich in der Armee von Schleswig-Holstein, im Jahr 1849 wurde er ins zoologische Museum in Kiel berufen. In Kiel war er ab 1854 auch als Dozent tätig. Im Jahr 1859 wurde er nach dem Tod von Franz Ludwig Fick Professor an der Universität Kiel, wo er auch die Leitung des Museum anatomicum übernahm. Claudius hatte sich auf die mikroskopische Anatomie spezialisiert und komplettierte die Sammlung des Marburger Anatomiemuseums mit Präparaten zur Morphologie des Innenohres. Ab 1862 verschlechterte sich sein Gesundheitszustand und 1867 wurde er aufgrund dessen seiner Pflichten entbunden. Sein Großvater war der Dichter Matthias Claudius.
