The chief editor is Gerd Schwinger (since 1990), second editor is Markus Ermert (since 2002).

Die Zeitung war am 15. August 1952 mit der Neustrukturierung der DDR-Bezirke als Das Freie Wort entstanden und am 9. März 1956 in Freies Wort umbenannt worden. Im Zuge der Privatisierung wurde Freies Wort 1991 vom Süddeutschen Verlag, München, (70 Prozent) und der SPD-Medienholding Deutsche Druck- und Verlagsgesellschaft mbh (dd_vg), Hamburg, (30 Prozent) übernommen. Chefredakteur ist Herbert Wessels, Stellvertreter Markus Ermert.
