The Free Art license is the English language version of the Licence Art Libre, a French copyleft license for works of art. Created in July 2000, it is the first free license, in the spirit of the GNU General Public License, dedicated to works of art. The Free Art licence authorises the user to freely copy, spread, and transform creative works while respecting the author's rights.

  • La Licence Art Libre (ou LAL) est un contrat qui applique le principe du Copyleft à la création artistique. Elle autorise tout tiers (personne physique ou morale), ayant accepté ses conditions, à procéder à la copie, la diffusion et la transformation d'une œuvre, comme à son exploitation gratuite ou commerciale, à condition qu'il soit toujours possible d'accéder à sa source pour la copier, la diffuser ou la transformer. Elle a vu le jour en juillet 2000, suite aux rencontres Copyleft Attitude organisées par Emmanuelle Gall et les artistes : François Deck, Antonio Gallego, Roberto Martinez et Antoine Moreau. Elles se sont déroulées à « Accès Local » et « Public », deux lieux d'art contemporain à Paris. Elle s'est écrite grâce aux contributions de la liste de diffusion <copyleft_attitudeFichier:At sign. svgapril. org> et en particulier avec Mélanie Clément-Fontaine et David Geraud, juristes, et Isabelle Vodjdani et Antoine Moreau, artistes. Cette licence est consultable à l'adresse http://artlibre. org/licence/lal/; elle est également disponible en anglais, en allemand, en espagnol, en italien, et en portugais. Soumise au droit français (car apparue dans ce cadre), elle est cependant valide dans tous les pays ayant signés la Convention de Berne (cette convention établit une norme juridique internationale sur la propriété littéraire et artistique).
