  • Freckle Juice is a 1971 children's book by Judy Blume. This short story is about Andrew Marcus, a second grade student who wants to look like Nicky Lane (a fellow classmate, and who happens to have a large number of freckles) by having freckles. Andrew wants freckles so his mother won't be able to tell if his face is dirty, and he makes many attempts to get freckles. A girl comes from another school and in his class, her name is Sharon, who often fools him using sneaky tricks, tells him he can get freckles by drinking a concoction that she claims she used to get freckles, or rather a freckle. She gives him the recipe for "Freckle Juice" for fifty cents, and he ends up drinking the concoction, after which he gets very sick. His second attempt was drawing several little dots on his face with a blue marker. Unfortunately, everybody sees through this and ends up laughing at him during reading, including Sharon. His teacher gives him a bottle of "Magic Freckle Remover" so he can remove his blue "freckles". Ironically, the boy Andrew envied because of his real freckles (Nicky Lane) asks his teacher if he could use the "Magic Freckle Remover" as well, because he hates his freckles. Later, Sharon whispers to Nicky about how to get rid of his freckles.
