Franz Vranitzky is a former Austrian politician of the SPÖ party. He was Chancellor of Austria from 1986 until 1997. From 1976 to 1984, Vranitzky was director of several banks and Minister of Finance until 1986. After the president election of Kurt Waldheim, Chancellor Fred Sinowatz resigned and proposed Franz Vranitzky to be his successor. The coalition government with the FPÖ was continued.

  • Franz Vranitzky is a former Austrian politician of the SPÖ party. He was Chancellor of Austria from 1986 until 1997. From 1976 to 1984, Vranitzky was director of several banks and Minister of Finance until 1986. After the president election of Kurt Waldheim, Chancellor Fred Sinowatz resigned and proposed Franz Vranitzky to be his successor. The coalition government with the FPÖ was continued. However, at the party rally on September 13, 1986, the moderate Vice Chancellor Norbert Steger won less than 50% of the votes and the right-wing populist Jörg Haider was elected as the new FPÖ chairman. The following day, therefore, Vranitzky dissolved the government and new parliamentary elections took place. A new government was formed on January 21 1987 by the SPÖ and ÖVP. Vranitzky retained the Chancellorship, while ÖVP politician Alois Mock became Vice Chancellor. During the government Vranitzky III, Austria became a member of the EU in 1995. In foreign policy, some discussions on Federal President Kurt Waldheim (officer during World War II) caused a sort of international isolation. Domestic policy was influenced by almost no contacts Vranitzky-Haider, while the FPÖ got about 20% at intermediate elections. Vranitzky resigned in January 1997 and undertook OSCE tasks for Albania. His successor as Chancellor was the former Minister of Finance Viktor Klima.
