- Franponais (a portmanteau of French and Japanese, using the French forms français and japonais), is known for its misuse of French words or phrases in Japan. Along with the term franponais, one may see "framponais", "flançais" or "flanponais", which makes a reference to the stereotypical confusion of L and R in Japanese English. In Japan, not unlike in the English-speaking world, it is seen as stylish to use French words in areas related to France and French high culture, like fashion, cuisine, hairstyles, or pastry. French appears most frequently on signs at stores, on t-shirts, on menus, and other places where franponais can be used to make a product seem more of a high culture item than a mass culture item. The Japanese word for the French language is フランス語 furansugo. Because very few Japanese people can speak French fluently, mistakes easily recognizable to native French speakers are frequently overlooked. The prevalence and frequency of these mistakes sometimes resemble a separate language, hence the term Franponais. It uses French words, but with many spelling errors and grammatical faults (to varying degrees; sometimes the language may closely resemble true French). In many cases, phrases in Franponais seem to represent a word-for-word translation from one language to the other. Ordinarily, there is little incentive for manufacturers to correct persistent errors, since the target audience of these words and phrases is primarily Japanese, and not Francophone. French-speaking tourists exhibit varying reactions to Franponais. Some consider it shocking or disorienting, whereas others consider it entertaining or humorous. Some may consider it a charming affectation of Japan and its people. In the case of Québécois, many of whom speak both French and English, they may choose to communicate in English because it is more common to speak English in Japan (although French is becoming increasingly popular as well).

Dans de nombreux cas, les phrases en franponais semblent avoir été traduites mot à mot depuis d'autres langues. On peut y voir une négligence de la part des fabricants, mais il faut savoir que les phrases en français ont avant tout un but décoratif et que le public ciblé n'est pas francophone. Même si le franponais peut choquer le touriste francophone au premier abord, il devient rapidement amusant de repérer les « perles » franponaises. Au final, il apporte un charme supplémentaire à une visite du Japon.

In Giappone, analogamente a quanto avviene nel mondo anglosassone, è considerato un segno distintivo l'utilizzo di espressioni francesi negli ambiti collegati alla Francia, in particolare nei settori della moda e della cucina. Il Francese appare frequentemente su insegne, marchi e menu: in generale in contesti dove il franponais può contribuire a dare la percezione di un superiore livello qualitativo di un prodotto. La parola giapponese per definire la lingua francese è フランス語 furansugo. A causa della scarsità di giapponesi in grado di parlare fluentemente il Francese, errori facilmente riconoscibili agli occhi di madrelingua francesi sono spesso ignorati nel franponais. Gli errori commessi sono di pronuncia e grammaticali e spesso la traduzione avviene in maniera letterale parola per parola dal Giapponese, senza tenere conto delle diverse strutture sintattiche. Ciononostante coloro che fanno uso del franponais in ambito commerciale hanno poco interesse a correggere questi errori, visto che il target cui si rivolgono è composto da giapponesi e non da francofoni.
