He was an altar boy in Sacred Heart Chapel. He also played football for the school team and Harmony Row Boys Club. He wrote for and performed with many influential recording artists and is best known for his album Full House, the single Darlin' and his duet on Still in Love with you, with Phil Lynott. In an article published in Rolling Stone magazine in 1978 Bob Seger remarked that Miller, "was a huge influence" on him.

Sein größter Erfolg war der internationale Hit Darlin' (1978) (D #5, A #3, CH #2, UK #6) . Im August 1994 erlitt er eine Hirnblutung mit monatelagem Krankenhausaufenthalt. Nach langer Genesungsphase hat er 2003 mit Will Jennings den Song Sun Goes Up Sun Goes Down geschrieben. Vor seiner Erkrankung hat er Aufnahmen mit Joe Walsh gemacht, die 2006 unter dem Titel Long Way Home veröffentlicht wurden.
