- Frankie Knuckles is an American DJ, record producer and remix artist. He played an important role in developing house music (an electronic, disco-influenced dance music) as a Chicago DJ in the 1980s and he helped to popularize house music in the 1990s, with his work as a producer and remixer. In 2005, Knuckles was inducted into the Dance Music Hall of Fame for his achievements as a DJ.

Über seinen Freund Larry Levan kam er bereits in Teenager-Jahren in Kontakt zur aufkeimenden Disco- und Dance-Szene. Sie interessierten sich vor allem für die Disc-Jockeys und Frankie erhielt 1972 zum ersten mal die Gelegenheit, an den Plattentellern zu stehen. Er wurde von Tee Scott für sechs Monate für den Club „Better Days“ engagiert. Levan und Knuckles durften zudem Nicks Siano (DJ in „The Gallery“) beim Vorbereiten der Partys helfen. Von 1972 bis 1976 halfen sie auch im „Continental Baths“, wo Knuckles seine Fertigkeiten als DJ ausbauen konnte. Mitte der Siebziger Jahre zog der New Yorker Robert Williams nach Chicago, um dort einen neuen Club zu eröffnen. Über einen gemeinsamen Freund gelangte er an Knuckles und beauftragte (nachdem Levan abgesagt hatte) ihn als DJ. Knuckles zog nach Chicago und wurde Resident DJ im legendären Warehouse, wo durch Knuckles' revolutionäre Mix-Techniken aus der Disco- und RnB-Musik House entstand. Als das Warehouse 1982 seine Eintrittspreise verdoppelte, war Knuckles empört und verließ den Club. Er eröffnete das „Power Plant“. Gegen Mitte der 80er verdrängte Hip-Hop die House-Szene und das Power Plant schloss 1986. 1987 versuchte es Knuckles erneut und eröffnete den Club „Power House“, der aber durch die Behörden schnell wieder geschlossen wurde. Ende der 80er Jahre musste er Chicago verlassen, nachdem er mit Jamie Principle mehrere Tracks aufgenommen hatte und diese hinter dessen Rücken gleich an 2 Labels verkaufte, woraufhin Principle den Track "Knucklehead" aufnahm. Obwohl die frühe House-Music-Szene oft mafiaähnliche Geschäftspraktiken aufwies, war Knuckles nach dieser Aktion erstmal unerwünscht und zog nach New York City. In den 90er Jahren war Knuckles sechs Jahre lang Resident DJ im New Yorker „Sound Factory“. Außerdem wurde er weltweit gebucht und tourte um den ganzen Globus. Als Remixer war Knuckles unter anderem für Michael Jackson und Diana Ross tätig und gewann 1997 einen Grammy. Große Ehre wurde Knuckles zuteil, als Chicago die Straße, an der das Warehouse lag, am 25. August 2004 in „Honorary Frankie Knuckles Way“ umbenannte. 2005 erfolgte seine Aufnahme in die Dance Music Hall of Fame.

Il acquiert à cette occasion le surnom de "Godfather of House". En 1987, Frankie Knuckles revient à New York et fonde Def Mix Productions avec David Morales. Il loue alors ses services à Michael Jackson, Diana Ross, Inner City ou encore Chaka Khan. En 1991, il signe un contrat avec Virgin et sort son 1 album, Beyond the Mix. Suivent Welcome to the Real World (1995), Mardi Gras (2001), Motivation (2002) et New Reality (2004). La légende prétend qu'il aurait "inventé" la House. En 1985, alors qu'il est résident du club Warehouse à Chicago, il inaugure une nouvelle façon d'utiliser les disques, puisqu'en plus de les enchaîner, il va prendre le parti de les mixer ensemble, utiliser le sampling et finalement donner naissance sans le savoir à la House. "And house music was born" scande alors Fingers, Inc.. On ne peut pourtant pas attribuer cette invention à lui seul, de nombreux DJs de Chicago ont participé à cette aventure, comme Marshall Jefferson, Steve 'Silk' Hurley, Tony Humphries, Ron Hardy, Larry Heard, Jesse Saunders, Curtis Jones ou Vince Lawrence.

Po klęsce muzyki disco zaczęto rozglądać się za innymi rodzajami muzyki. Era disco dobiegła końca a tymczasem na parkietach klubów czekały setki klubowiczów spragnionych dobrej zabawy. Wtedy właśnie pojawił się Frankie Knuckles. Zaczynał w klubie The Gallery, gdzie razem z przyjacielem Larrym Levanem odpowiedzialny był za podtrzymywanie dobrej atmosfery i między innymi za przygotowywanie ponczu, do którego dodawali LSD. Frankie zaczynał od przerabiania starych nagrań. Uzbrojony w żyletkę i magnetofon szpulowy przerabiał stare kawałki, wycinał części zbędne, wydłużał partie taneczne. Z czasem sięgnął po syntezator i TR-909 Rolanda. Prymitywna technika okazała się niezwykle skuteczna i przyniosła sławę Frankiemu nie tylko w Chicago, ale w całych Stanach. Jak się później okazało - TR-909 stał się symbolem muzyki house i jej nieodłącznym elementem. Tak zostało zdefiniowane brzmienie house'u. W tamtych czasach nie było to nic innego jak tylko disco wzbogacone o mocniejszy rytm, w bardziej tanecznym wydaniu. Dziś house to mocny kick, dobry bas, wpadająca w ucho melodia, jakiś tekst, elementy disco i funku. Muzycy obywają się już bez trupy instrumentalistów, czasami całej orkiestry - tak niezbędnych przy nagraniach funkowych i disco. Dziś wystarczy trochę sprzętu, stare płyty do zmiksowania. Obecnie centrum muzyki house w Europie jest chyba Francja. Głównymi przedstawicielami house'u są: Daft Punk, Bob Sinclair, Dimitri from Paris, Cassius, DJ Sneak, Da Mob i wielu innych.
