In den 1980er Jahren schaffte er durch die Zusammenarbeit mit Regisseur Richard Fleischer seinen endgültigen Durchbruch. Er erlangte einen exzellenten Ruf als Cutter für aufwändige Actionfilme durch seine Zusammenarbeit mit Paul Verhoeven und Renny Harlin. Seit 1998 ist Frank J. Urioste Senior Vice President in der Filmentwicklungsabteilung bei Warner Bros..
