Francis Gillette was a politician from Connecticut, USA. He was the father of playwright William Gillette and politician and editor Edward H. Gillette. Born in Old Windsor, Connecticut (today part of the town of Bloomfield), Gillette moved with his parents to Ashfield, Massachusetts as a child. He graduated from Yale College in 1829 and commenced the study of law, but his health becoming impaired he instead engaged in agricultural pursuits in Bloomfield.

- Francis Gillette war ein US-amerikanischer Politiker der Free Soil Party. Gillette war noch ein Kind, als seine Eltern mit ihm von Connecticut nach Massachusetts umzogen, wo sich die Familie in Ashfield niederließ. Er graduierte 1829 am Yale College und setzte danach zunächst sein Jura-Studium fort, ehe er aus gesundheitlichen Gründen nach Connecticut zurückkehrte und sich dort in der Landwirtschaft betätigte. Seine politische Laufbahn begann mit der Wahl ins Repräsentantenhaus von Connecticut 1832; weitere Amtszeiten folgten in den Jahren 1836 und 1838. 1841 unterlag er bei der Wahl zum Gouverneur gegen Chauncey Cleveland; weitere vergebliche Anläufe, dieses Amt zu erreichen, folgten. Von 1849 bis 1865 war Gillette Vorsitzender der staatlichen Behörde für Erziehung. Nachdem er der Free Soil Party beigetreten war, wurde Francis Gillette 1854 in den US-Senat gewählt, wo er den Platz des während der Legislaturperiode zurückgetretenen Truman Smith einnahm. Nach Ende seiner Amtszeit 1855 wurde er für eine erneute Kandidatur nicht in Betracht gezogen. In der Folge engagierte er sich beim Aufbau der Republikanischen Partei in Connecticut. Bei der Parteizeitung Evening Press fungierte er für viele Jahre als stiller Teilhaber. Abseits der Politik hielt Francis Gillette Vorträge über landwirtschaftliche Themen und zur Abstinenzbewegung. Er gehörte zum Leitungsgremium der Central Connecticut State University, deren Präsident er auch längere Zeit war. Beruflich betätigte er sich noch im Immobiliengeschäft. Gillettes älterer Sohn Edward ging wie sein Vater in die Politik und wurde 1879 Abgeordneter im US-Repräsentantenhaus. Der 13 Jahre jüngere Sohn William machte sich einen Namen als Dramatiker.

He was a member of the Connecticut House of Representatives in 1832, 1836 and 1838 and was an unsuccessful candidate for Governor of Connecticut in 1841, losing to Chauncey F. Cleveland, and several times subsequently. Gillette served as chairman of the Connecticut Board of Education from 1849 to 1865 and moved to Hartford, Connecticut in 1852. He was elected a Free Soiler to the United States Senate in 1854 to fill a vacancy and served until the end of the term in 1855, not being a candidate for reelection. Afterwards, Gillette became a lecturer on agriculture and temperance and was a trustee of the Connecticut State Normal School, also serving as its president for many years. He aided in the formation of the Republican Party in Connecticut and for several years was a silent partner in the Evening Press, the organ of the party. He engaged in the real estate business in Hartford, Connecticut until his death there on September 30, 1879. He was interred in Riverside Cemetery in Farmington, Connecticut.
