- Frédéric Jules Sichel was a French physician and entomologist. Sichel was born Frankfurt am Main. After his initial studies he went to live in Paris in 1829 where he opened the first ophthalmic clinic in 1832 and is credited with bringing modern ophthalmology to France from Austria and Germany. He obtained his doctorate in Frankfurt in 1833 with a thesis entitled Propositions générales sur l'ophthalmologie, suivies de l'histoire de l'ophthalmie rhumatismale. Afterwards Sichel trained several famous French ophthalmologists at his Paris clinic. He was interested in oriental languages and archaeology writing extensively on the seals of Roman doctors. In entomology he specialized in Hymenoptera. Sichel died in Paris.

Il s'intéresse aux langues orientales, à l'archéologie et à l'entomologie, il se spécialise notamment sur les hyménoptères. Il fait paraître : Traité de l'ophthalmie, la cataracte et l'amaurose, pour servir de supplément au Traité des maladies des yeux de Weller (G. Baillière, Paris, 1837). Mémoire sur le glaucome (imprimerie de N. -J. Gregoir, Bruxelles, 1842). Iconographie ophthalmologique, ou description... des maladies de l'organe de la vue... Texte accompagné d'un atlas de 80 planches.... Guide de la chasse des hyménoptères. Catalogus specierum generis Scolia (sensu latiori), continens specierum diagnoses, descriptiones synonymiamque, additis annotationibus explanatoriis criticisque conscripserunt Henricus de Saussure... (Catalogue des espèces de l'ancien genre Scolia, contenant les diagnoses, les descriptions et la synonymie des espèces, avec des remarques explicatives et critiques) (V. Masson et fils, Paris, 1864). - Frédéric Jules Sichel - francuski oftalmolog i entomolog. Sichel urodził się w żydowskiej rodzinie we Frankfurcie. Studiował medycynę w Tübingen od roku 1820. W 1822 przeniósł się na uczelnię w Berlinie, na której uzyskał tytuł doktora w 1825. Źródła francuskie podają, że studiował także w Würzburgu gdzie od 1823 pracował jako chef de clinique pod kierunkiem profesora Johanna Lucasa Schönleina. Od 1825 do 1829 był asystentem klinice oftalmologicznej Christopha Friedricha von Jaegera w Wiedniu. W 1829 osiadł w Paryżu gdzie założył pierwszą klinikę okulistyczną w 1832 (przy rue Jacob). W 1833 zdał francuskie państwowe egzaminy potwierdzające jego wykształcenie medyczne zdobyte w Niemczech. Kolejna klinikę otworzył w 1836 (przy rue Férou). Jednym z jego współpracowników w tych instytucjach był polski lekarz oftalmolog Wiktor Feliks Szokalski. Zapoczątkował we Francji wykorzystanie oftalmoskopu. Wielokrotnie przewodził kongresom okulistycznym i był honorowym prezesem Towarzystwa Lekarzy Niemieckich w Paryżu. Wspierał jako lekarz działania edukacyjne komitetu Legii Honorowej. Pisał artykuły do prasy medycznej (głównie tematyka związana z okulistyką) zarówno francuskiej jak i niemieckiej. Swojej działalności nie ograniczał tylko do medycyny. Był miłośnikiem języków orientalnych, archeologii i entomologii (współpracował w tych dziedzinach z fachowymi wydawnictwami), tłumaczył książki z greki i łaciny.
