The company was founded in 1974 as a manufacturer of plastic products (notably connectors) by Terry Gou, who remains its CEO. It has been listed on the Taiwan Stock Exchange since 1991. The company opened its first manufacturing plant in China in 1988, a factory in Shenzhen that is now the company's largest, with more than 270,000 employees. Beginning in 1994, Foxconn purchased development centres in the United States and Japan. In 1997 and 1998, Foxconn established additional manufacturing plants in the UK and the US. As of 2007, the company and its subsidiaries owned plants in the Czech Republic, Hungary, Mexico, Brazil, India and Vietnam.

Über 15.000 Ingenieure in den USA, China und Taiwan arbeiten an der Entwicklung neuer Produkte. Seit 1993 besitzt das Unternehmen Produktionsstätten auf dem chinesischen Festland. So sollen bei der Fertigung des iPod unmenschliche Arbeitsbedingungen herrschen. Es wird von 15-stündigen Arbeitstagen und Monatslöhnen von 40 Euro berichtet, die deutlich unterhalb des Mindestlohns von 80 Euro in der Provinz Shenzhen liegen. Bemängelt wurden unter anderem auch die unfaire Behandlung der Arbeiter und der Zustand der Unterkünfte. Dies wurde aber durch eine Besichtigung einer Delegation von Apple (augenscheinlich) widerlegt. Eine weitere Marke des Konzerns ist Leadtek, ein Hersteller von Grafikkarten.
