Die Pläne des Ingenieurs Thomas Bouch wurden aber gestoppt, nachdem die ebenfalls von ihm erbaute Brücke über den Fluss Tay bei Dundee am 28. Dezember 1879 eingestürzt war. Daraufhin wurden die Ingenieure Sir John Fowler und Benjamin Baker mit der Planung einer stabileren Brücke beauftragt, die auch durch ihr Aussehen den Fahrgästen das Vertrauen in die Konstruktion zurückgeben sollte. Das Ergebnis sollte eine völlig neuartige Konstruktion in Form einer Auslegerbrücke sein, die auch größte Belastungen aushalten konnte. Nach sieben Jahren Bauzeit wurde die Brücke 1890 offiziell eröffnet. Sie ist 2,5 Kilometer lang und besteht aus drei massiven je 110 Meter hohen, 1×495 und 2×460 m langen, auf je vier Pfeilern ruhenden rautenförmigen Fachwerkträgern, an die sich vier kleinere Viadukte anschließen. Der Zugverkehr verläuft in knapp 50 Metern Höhe über dem Wasser, so dass der Schiffsverkehr weiterhin ungehindert den Firth of Forth befahren kann. Die Spannweiten zwischen den Hauptpfeilern betragen 521 Meter. Das gesamte Bauwerk besteht aus etwa 54.000 Tonnen Stahl und wird von 6,5 Millionen Nieten zusammengehalten. Zum Zeitpunkt ihrer Eröffnung war die Brücke die größte der Welt. Die in dieser Größenordnung weltweit einzigartige Konstruktion hat sich im Laufe der Jahre bewährt und ist weiterhin regulär in Betrieb. Es wird zudem gesagt, dass die Brücke Gustave Eiffel, der die Bauarbeiten von Beginn an beobachtete, als grundlegende Erfahrung für den Bau des Eiffelturms diente. Der wesentliche Grund, weswegen sich das Konzept der Brücke später dennoch nicht durchsetzte, waren vor allem die hohen Baukosten, die die damals astronomische Summe von 2,5 Millionen Pfund ausmachten. Während der Bauzeit der Forth Rail Bridge arbeiteten 5.000 Menschen an dem Projekt, von denen 57 bei Unfällen ums Leben kamen. Dies war für derartige Bauprojekte in jener Zeit jedoch nicht ungewöhnlich. Die Forth Bridge war Vorbild für die Québec-Brücke.
