Sein wohl kürzester Auftritt fand allerdings im erfolgreichsten aller Musikvideos statt, nämlich in Michael Jacksons Thriller. Mit Horrorlegende Lon Chaney junior spielte er in dessen letztem Kinofilm Dracula vs. Frankenstein aus dem Jahr 1971. Mit seiner umfassenden Sammlung zum Thema Science Fiction galt Ackerman als einer der größten Kenner der phantastischen Literatur und des phantastischen Films. Die Sammlung umfasste filmhistorische Exponate wie beispielsweise Requisiten und Kostümteile von Lon Chaney aus dem Stummfilm London after Midnight; an seinen Fingern trug er auch im Privatleben die Ringe, die Bela Lugosi in Abbott and Costello meet Frankenstein und Boris Karloff in The Mummy trugen. Zu Ackermanns privaten Freunden zählten Genre-Größen wie Vincent Price, Ray Harryhausen, Ray Bradbury und Christopher Lee; in Deutschland pflegte er intensive Kontakte zu dem Autor Rolf Giesen und dem Schau- und Puppenspieler Gerd J. Pohl. Daneben betätigte sich Ackerman auch für die Welthilfssprache Esperanto. Nach Ackerman wurde der Forry Award benannt, den die Los Angeles Science Fantasy Society seit 1966 für besondere Verdienste in der Science Fiction verleiht. Ackerman selbst bekam den Preis im Jahr 2002.
