- Flying Blue is the frequent flyer program of Air France and KLM. In June 2005, the frequent flyer programs of Air France (Fréquence plus) and KLM (Flying Dutchman) were combined to the Flying Blue program after the two companies merged into a single airline. Apart from KLM and Air France, Flying Blue is also the frequent-flyer scheme of various carriers which used to share Air France's Fréquence plus or KLM's Flying Dutchman schemes, e.g. Kenya Airways (partly owned by KLM), Aircalin (partly owned by Air France), etc. On June 15, 2007, it also became the loyalty scheme of Air Europa as the company was moving towards becoming an associate member of SkyTeam sponsored by Air France (associate members have to abandon their own frequent flyer program and adopt that of the sponsoring carrier). Flying Blue members can earn and spend mileage points on flights and services of Air France-KLM, other companies of the SkyTeam airline alliance and assorted other financial, travel, and transportation companies. Beware: Contrary to Aeroplan and others, some of Flying Blue policies for crediting miles are intended to heavily penalise the customer twice. First, you start losing your miles after 20 months of no flying with them unless you take another flight within the Sky Team group of Flying Blue. Second, if you take a flight with a Sky Team member other than Air France, KLM... , you will be deducted 75% of your miles if you are in a certain service class of seat that most customers are not even aware of. For example, flying in Class G on Continental Airlines from Fort Lauderdale to Ottawa (of which approximately 1,600 miles are expected to be credited) will only net you 25% of that amount (400 miles) on your account, which is very poor customer-service. This is another level of complexity beside luggage, lack of decent food on many flights, security requirements, self-serve check-in... , that's imposed on the customer, and that the customer finds out after the fact.
