After signing as a free agent with the St. Louis Blues in October 1970, Thomson played a regular shift on the CHL's Kansas City Blues in 1970–71. Thomson went through the usual growing pains as an NHL rookie in 1971–72 and spent a bit more time in the minors. Beginning in 1972–73, he spent five years as a playmaker and penalty killer in St. Louis. He set a personal-high 36 points in 1974–75 playing on a line with Wayne Merrick and Pierre Plante. By the late '70s, he lost his full-time role with the Blues and was a CHL regular. After scoring 41 goals for the Salt Lake Golden Eagles in 1978–79, he was placed on the league's first all-star team. Thomson retired in 1982 after playing most of his last five pro seasons with Salt Lake.
