The distance from Antwerp to Brussels is approximately 51 km and Mechelen is right in the middle, between Mechelen and Brussels is the city of Vilvoorde; with the harbour stretching to the north of Antwerp this has since long been recognized as a north-south major urban and industrial axis. The western triangular area of the larger cities Antwerp - Brussels - Ghent comprises the cities of Lokeren located west of Sint-Niklaas, Dendermonde and Aalst as well as the industrial area Boom - Willebroek, and is generally slightly less urbanized; such may also be true for the smaller eastern Antwerp - Brussels - Leuven triangle, comprising the city of Lier. Thus roughly in the geometrical shape of a diamond, the term Vlaamse Ruit (which has no connotation with any jewel) or 'Flemish Diamond' has become a reference to the most urbanized and industrialized (and prosperous) area in Belgium.

Het gebied wordt ook wel Vlaamse diamant of Vlaamse driehoek genoemd. Het gebied bestaat uit het verstedelijkte gebied tussen Brussel, Gent, Antwerpen en Leuven. In dit gebied bevinden zich ook de stedelijke gebieden van Mechelen, Sint-Niklaas en Aalst, de kleinstedelijke gebieden van Asse, Beveren, Boom, Dendermonde, Lier, Lokeren, Sint-Katelijne-Waver, Wetteren en Willebroek. Het gebied is een van de dichtstbevolkte gebieden ter wereld met ca. 830 inw. /km². In totaal wonen er in het gebied 5,5 miljoen mensen (2000). Het gebied huisvest de tweede haven van Europa, de haven van Antwerpen, en het bestuurlijke centrum van de EU en dat van de NAVO, te Brussel. Het gebied is vooral als planologisch concept van belang, door de sterke interne verwevenheid van de stedelijke economie. Dit resulteert in speciale aandacht in de Vlaamse structuurplannen.
