McWilliams' husband is musician John Mark Painter, whom she married in August 1991. McWilliams (along with drummer/brother Shawn McWilliams), grew up in East Prairie, Missouri where she was crowned "Miss Sweet Corn," and singing locally whenever and wherever she could.
