- File sharing is the practice of distributing or providing access to digitally stored information, such as computer programs, multi-media (audio, video), documents, or electronic books. It may be implemented in a variety of storage, transmission, and distribution models. Common methods are manual sharing using removable media, centralized computer file server installations on computer networks, World Wide Web-based hyperlinked documents, and the use of distributed peer-to-peer (P2P) networking. The increasing popularity of the mp3 music format in the late 1990s led to the release and growth of Napster and other software designed to aid in the sharing of electronic files. Other popular networks include Gnutella, Gnutella2, eDonkey2000, the now-defunct Kazaa network, and BitTorrent. Many file sharing programs and services have been shut down due to litigation by groups such as the RIAA and MPAA. During the early 2000s, the fight against copyright infringement expanded into lawsuits against individual users of file sharing software. The economic impact on media industries is disputed; although publishers and copyright holders claim economic damage, some studies have suggested that file sharing is not the primary cause of declines in sales. File sharing remains widespread, with mixed public opinion about the morality of the practice for commercial material.
- Mit Filesharing (deutsch Dateifreigabe oder gemeinsamer Dateizugriff, wörtlich Dateien teilen) bezeichnet man das direkte Weitergeben von Dateien zwischen Benutzern des Internets unter Verwendung eines Peer-to-Peer-Netzwerks. Dabei befinden sich die Daten auf den Computern der Teilnehmer oder dedizierten Servern und werden von dort aus verteilt. Normalerweise kopiert man Daten von fremden Rechnern (Download), während man gleichzeitig andere Daten versendet (Upload). Um auf solche Netzwerke zugreifen zu können, braucht man spezielle Computerprogramme.
- Il file sharing è la condivisione di file all'interno di una rete comune. Può avvenire attraverso una rete con struttura client-server (cliente-servente) oppure peer-to-peer (pari a pari). Le più famose reti di peer-to-peer sono: Gnutella, OpenNap, Bittorrent, eDonkey, Kademlia. Non vanno confuse con reti che costituiscono un filesystem distribuito, come Freenet. Queste reti possono permettere di individuare più copie dello stesso file nella rete per mezzo di hash crittografici, di riprendere lo scaricamento del file, di eseguire lo scaricamento da più fonti contemporaneamente, di ricercare un file in particolare per mezzo di un URI Universal Resource Identifier. Programmi di File-sharing, sono utilizzati direttamente o indirettamente per trasferire file da un computer ad un altro su Internet, o su reti aziendali Intranet. Questa condivisione ha dato origine al modello peer-to-peer.

Cea mai simplă metodă este stoacrea datelor pe un server web central (sau chiar mai multe), la care în principiu au acces toţi utilizatorii Internetului. Totuşi în general se procedează altfel, şi anume pe baza principiului "Peer-to-Peer" (= de la egal la egal; prescurtat uneori cu P2P), fără server central. În acest caz utilizatorii se folosesc de programe speciale, care stau la dispoziţie orişicui în Web.

Этот процесс называется раздачей файла. Вторым значением термина «совместное использование файлов» является одновременная правка файла несколькими пользователями. Это используется в современных системах разработки, нередко в сочетании с определённой системой управления версиями.
