Sie war an einer festen Achse hinter den Kopfstützen befestigt und konnte um 180 Grad nach hinten auf die Kofferraumklappe gedreht abgelegt werden. So wandelte sich das Coupé zum Targamodell. Für diese Serie wurde der Motor so modifiziert, dass er wie im Ferrari 612 Scaglietti 397 kW (540 PS) leistete. Seit 2003 ist wahlweise auch das F1-Getriebe erhältlich. Das aus der Formel 1 abgeleitete System ermöglicht das Schalten über Schaltwippen hinter dem Lenkrad. Rechts wird raufgeschaltet und links runter. Je nach gewähltem Einstellungsprogramm, Komfort oder Sport, ändern sich die Schaltzeiten von kurz auf sehr kurz. Der Maranello F1 beschleunigt mit dem halbautomatischen Getriebe rund fünf Zehntelsekunden schneller als ein handgeschalteter. Seit 2004 war der 575 wahlweise auch mit einem speziellen Fahrwerkspaket erhältlich, das den Wagen zum GTC, zum Gran Turismo Competizione machte. Diese Fahrwerksauslegung war speziell auf den Renneinsatz abgestimmt und ging mit einem Optikpaket einher, das z.  B. neue Endschalldämpfer beinhaltete, jedoch den Serienmotor unberührt ließ. Anfang 2006 wurden die letzten 575 hergestellt. Kurz darauf erschien der Nachfolger Ferrari 599.

Updates from the 550 include a renewed interior, but with substantial improvements mechanically, including bigger brake discs, a larger and more powerful engine, a different weight distribution, refined aerodynamics and fluid-dynamics and an adaptive suspension set-up (the four independent suspensions are also controlled by the gearbox, to minimize pitch throughout the 200-milliseconds shift time). Two six-speed transmissions are available, a conventional manual gearbox and, for the first time on a Ferrari V12, Magneti Marelli's semi-automatic 'F1' gearbox. The model number refers to total engine displacement in litres, whilst the 'M' is an abbreviation of 'modificato' or 'modified'. For 2005, the company developed a new GTC handling package and Superamerica version (a limited run of 559 Retractable hardtop variants of the coupe), along with raising the power from 515 PS (379 kW; 508 hp) to 540 PS (400 kW; 530 hp).
