- Fat Thursday (German Fetter Donnerstag, Schmotziger Donnerstag, or in areas where carnival is celebrated Weiberfastnacht, Polish Tłusty czwartek) is a traditional Polish and German feast marking the last Thursday before Lent and is associated with the celebration of Carnival. Because Lent is a time of fasting, the next opportunity to feast would not be until Easter. It is similar to, but should not be confused with, the French festival of Mardi Gras ("Fat Tuesday"). Traditionally it is a day dedicated to eating, when people meet in their homes or cafés with their friends and relatives and eat large quantities of sweets, cakes and other meals forbidden during Lent. Among the most popular all-national dishes served on that day are pączki or berliner, fist-sized donuts filled with rose marmalade, and faworki, French dough fingers served with lots of powdered sugar. In Italy, Giovedì Grasso (Fat Thursday) is also celebrated, but it is not very different from Martedì Grasso. It is also similar to the Greek custom of Tsiknopempti (loosely translatable as "Barbecue Thursday"), which involves the massive consumption of charred meat in the evening of Thursday, ten days before the beginning of the Great Lent. In Spain this celebration is called jueves lardero, and in Catalan-speaking areas, dijous gras.
- Mit dem Schmotzigen Donnerstag (auch Schmotziger Dunschtig, Schmotziga Dorschdich, Schmotziga Dauschteg, Gombiger Doschdig oder einfach nur Schmotziga, in der Schweiz Schmutziger Donnerstag) beginnt in der schwäbisch-alemannischen Fastnacht die eigentliche Fastnachtszeit. Er fällt auf den Donnerstag vor Aschermittwoch. In vielen Fastnachtshochburgen werden Umzüge veranstaltet und Straßenfastnachten gefeiert, die Schüler „befreit“ sowie die Amtsgeschäfte und der Rathausschlüssel vom Bürgermeister bis zum Fastnachtsdienstag symbolisch an die Narren übergeben. Vielerorts (besonders im alemannischen Raum) werden in Fett gebackene Fasnetsküchle (ein Hefegebäck) gegessen. Ihm folgt der Rußige oder Bromige Freitag.

Cette célébration est quelque peu similaire au Mardi Gras français. Lors du Jeudi Gras, les Polonais se rassemblent dans les cafés ou en famille et se nourrissent de beignets dits pączki ou de gâteaux; les sucreries étant interdites pendant le Carême. Au XVIII siècle, c'était la date où sortait, à Paris, le cortège traditionnel du Bœuf Gras, un des plus beaux fleurons du Carnaval de Paris.

W Polsce oraz w katolickiej części Niemiec, wedle tradycji, w tym dniu dozwolone jest objadanie się. Najpopularniejsze potrawy to pączki i faworki, zwane również w niektórych regionach chrustem lub chruścikami. Następny czwartek jest czwartkiem po środzie popielcowej i należy do okresu Wielkiego Postu, podczas którego katolicy powinni zachowywać wstrzemięźliwość. Ponieważ data tłustego czwartku zależy od daty Wielkanocy, dzień ten jest świętem ruchomym. Powiedział Bartek, że dziś tłusty czwartek, a Bartkowa uwierzyła, dobrych pączków nasmażyła – mówi staropolskie przysłowie.
