Originally called the Preston Guardian, it was founded by Joseph Livesey, the ‘father’ of the total abstinence movement in Britain to support the campaign for the repeal of the Corn Laws. The first edition was printed on February 10, 1844, priced 4½d. It was re-launched as Farmers Guardian on May 30, 1958, to cover the wider area of Lancashire, Cheshire and the Lake District.
