Friedrich Wilhelm "F. W. " Murnau (December 28, 1888 – March 11, 1931) was one of the most influential German film directors of the silent era, and a prominent figure in the expressionist movement in German cinema during the 1920s. Although some of Murnau's films have been lost, most still survive.

Dit komt vooral doordat hij veel revolutionaire technieken heeft uitgevonden die sindsdien door anderen zeer vaak zijn nagedaan. Zo is hij bijvoorbeeld uitvinder van het subjectieve camerastandpunt, een standpunt waarbij de camera door de ogen van een personage kijkt. Hij begon zijn carrière in Duitsland en behoorde daar samen met Fritz Lang, Robert Wiene en Ernst Lubitsch tot de belangrijkste vooroorlogse filmmakers van dat land. Daarna vertrok hij naar Hollywood waar hij nog 2 speelfilms maakte voordat hij in 1931 bij een auto-ongeluk om het leven kwam. Het gerucht ging overigens dat hij homoseksueel geweest zou zijn, en dat zijn vriend zich samen met hem in de auto bevond op het moment van het ongeluk.
