The Expedition of Qatan occurred directly after the Battle of Uhud in 625. The expedition was ordered by Muhammad after he received intelligence that Tulayha and his brother Salamah ibn Khuwaylid were urging their tribe of Bani Assad to prepare to march on Medina. Therefore, Muhammad directed 150 Muslims to march quickly to disperse Bani Assad before they could set forth against the Muslims in Medina. For this expedition, Muhammad made `Abd Allah ibn `Abd al-Asad the commander.

Therefore, Muhammad directed 150 Muslims to march quickly to disperse Bani Assad before they could set forth against the Muslims in Medina. For this expedition, Muhammad made `Abd Allah ibn `Abd al-Asad the commander. Thereafter, `Abd Allah advanced with his men to Qatan in Nejd, where the Bani Assad were found. As soon as they saw the Muslims, the Bani Assad fled in all directions, and no fighting was undertaken. Consequently, `Abd Allah returned to Medina safely with his men. However, a wound (that was previously healing) sustained by `Abd Allah during the Battle of Uhud was reopened due to the fast marching to Qatan. As a result of the reopened wound, `Abd Allah ibn `Abd al-Asad later died.
