Excalibur is a Marvel Comics superhero group, an offshoot of the X-Men, usually based in the United Kingdom. Conceived by writer Chris Claremont and artist/co-writer Alan Davis, the original Excalibur first appeared in Excalibur: The Sword is Drawn (1987). The first Excalibur consisted of the British superhero Captain Britain, his lover Meggan, and several onetime members of the X-Men and related mutant teams. An eponymous series featuring the team lasted from 1988 until 1998.

Originally, it was a wacky series involving cross-dimensional travel that incorporated as many elements of Captain Britain’s mythos as it did the X-Men’s. It became a more typical X-Book in later years. Captain Britain reformed Excalibur to defend London in a series entitled New Excalibur, which debuted in 2005. Between Excalibur’s disbandment and reformation, a short-lived, ongoing series entitled Excalibur chronicled the efforts of X-Men founder Charles Xavier and his former nemesis Magneto to rebuild the mutant homeland of Genosha. Although written by Claremont with the same title, it had no connection to the superhero team.

In 2005 begon de serie New Excalibur, waarin Captain Britain de Excalibur groep met een aantal nieuwe leden nieuw leven in blaast om Londen te verdedigen. Tussen de oude en nieuwe Excalibur in verscheen er ook een andere serie getiteld Excalibur. Deze serie draaide geheel om Professor X en Magneto in hun poging Magneto’s oude thuisland voor mutanten, Genosha opnieuw op te bouwen. Deze serie had behalve de naam niets te maken met het superheldenteam.

Na ocasião os X-Men, Noturno, Fênix II (a filha de Ciclope e Jean Grey) e Lince Negra, uniram-se aos ingleses Capitão Britânia e sua namorada Meggan para enfrentar uma matilha de Lobisomens Guerreiros, enviados por Mojo, para pegar Rachel Summers (a Fênix). A partir daí, estando os X-Men dados como mortos, os cinco heróis resolveram se unir e montar o grupo Excalibur. Vários personagens passaram pelo grupo: Micromax; Pete Wisdom; Cerise; Amanda Sefton; Colossus; Douglock; Psylocke; Amanda Sefton; O grupo acabou na época do casamento do Capitão Britânia com Meggan. Na época a formação era: Noturno, Colossus, Douglock, Kitty Pride, Capitão Britânia (ou Britânico), Meggan e Lupina.
