- An ex-voto is a votive offering to a saint or divinity. It is given in fulfillment of a vow (hence the Latin term, short for ex voto suscepto, "from the vow made") or in gratitude or devotion. Ex-votos are placed in a church or chapel where the worshipper seeks grace or wishes to give thanks. The destinations of pilgrimages often include shrines decorated with ex-votos. Ex-votos can take a wide variety of forms. They are not only intended for the helping figure, but also as a testimony to later visitors of the received help. As such they may include texts explaining a miracle attributed to the helper, or symbols such as a painted or modeled reproduction of a miraculously healed body part, or a directly related item such as a crutch given by a person formerly lame. In the church of Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde in Marseille, France, the site of a major local pilgrimage, the ex-votos include paintings, plaques, model boats, war medals and even football shirts given by players and supporters of Olympique de Marseille, the local team. The magnificent Lod mosaic is thought to be an ex-voto expressing gratitude for rescue from a shipwreck. In a corner of the basilica of Saint Joseph's Oratory in Montreal there is a tall wall with thousands of crutches and other supports from those Brother André supposedly healed. Pope John Paul II recognized the authenticity of the miracles and beatified Brother André in 1982. - Un ex-voto est une offrande faite à un dieu en demande d'une grâce ou en remerciement d'une grâce obtenue. Ces objets peuvent prendre de multiples formes : plaques anatomiques, crucifix, tableaux, mais aussi, selon les régions et les sujets des prières : maquettes de bateaux, t-shirts de sportifs, volants d'automobiles, médailles militaires, etc... Locution latine, ex voto signifie « d'après le vœu » (conformément à ce qui a été souhaité). Se dit aussi, par dénigrement, d'un mauvais tableau dont le sujet est pieux.
- La locuzione latina Ex voto, tradotta letteralmente, significa a seguito di un voto. Viene usata per indicare un oggetto dato in dono ad una divinità. L'espressione completa è "Ex voto suscepto", cioè per voto fatto: questa pratica, comune, in differenti forme, a molte religioni, è un impegno che il credente assume nei confronti della divinità purché la stessa ne esaudisca le richieste, ovvero un ringraziamento per una grazia ricevuta.

Op het ex voto staat dan soms de afkorting P.G.R. die voor pro gratia recepta staat. Het gebruik van ex voto's is in vele godsdiensten bekend en wordt meer algemeen met de term votiefgave aangeduid.

Podiam ser ainda placas com inscrições, figuras esculpidas em madeira ou cera, muitas vezes representando partes do corpo que estavam adoecidas e foram curadas etc. Eram colocados numa igreja ou capela, para pagamento de promessa ou em agradecimento a uma graça alcançada. Foi uma prática muito recorrente na vida do Brasil Colônia, principalmente na região das Minas Gerais.
