Euzko Abendaren Ereserkia ("Anthem of the Basque Ethnicity") is the official anthem of the Basque Country. The original title uses the orthography Euzko. It should not be confused with Euzko Gudariak ("Basque Soldiers"), the anthem of the Euzko Gudarostea (the Basque Army during the Spanish Civil War) or with the Gernikako Arbola ("The tree of Guernica"), a popular Basque song. Tras la recuperación de la democracia y la aprobación del estatuto de autonomía del País Vasco (1979), el 14 de abril de 1983 el Parlamento Vasco adoptó, con los votos del Partido Nacionalista Vasco y del CDS y la oposición del PSE-PSOE, Euskadiko Ezkerra y Alianza Popular, esta melodía como himno oficial, negando su carácter partidista. Los opuestos a esta medida, sí la consideraban partidista y apostaban por la adopción de la canción de José María Iparraguirre Gernikako arbola ("El árbol de Guernica"). Lopputulos oli, että Baskimaan parlamentti julisti vain laulun sävelmän viralliseksi kansallislauluksi, kun taas laulun sanoille tätä asemaa ei annettu. De herinvoering ervan door het Baskische parlement op 14 april 1983 ondervond veel weerstand van diverse partijen die vonden dat het nog te sterk verbonden was aan de EAJ/PNV en niet genoeg aan de rest van de Basken. Wettelijk is enkel de muziek van het volkslied officieel, aangezien oppositiepartijen de tekst van Arana te religieus vonden en te sterk verbonden met de EAJ/PNV. Opvallend is, dat de drie woorden in de titel van het lied neologismen zijn; Sabino Arana heeft veel neologismen in het Baskisch ingevoerd. Twee andere liederen hebben geen status van officieel volkslied, maar worden vaak wel als zodanig beschouwd: Eusko Gudariak (De Baskische Strijders) was het lied van de Baskische strijders in de Spaanse Burgeroorlog, en is tegenwoordig populair als strijdlied van de links-nationalisten (ezker abertzaleak) en de ETA. Het door José María Iparraguirre geschreven lied Gernikako arbola (De Boom van Guernica) is populair in bredere lagen van de Baskische bevolking en ook in Frans-Baskenland.
