The European System of Accounts (often abbreviated as "ESA") is the system of national accounts and regional accounts used by members of the European Union. It was most recently updated in 1995. The 1995 ESA is broadly consistent with the United Nations System of National Accounts (1993 SNA) in definitions, accounting rules and classifications. However, it incorporates certain differences, particularly in its presentation, that are more in line with use within the European Union .

L'insieme dei conti è retto da una serie di relazioni del tipo "identità". La denominazione di conto trae origine dal fatto che i membri di ciascuna relazione possono essere considerati come le sezioni di un conto che rileva entrate e uscite, ricavi e costi, secondo schemi che si richiamano ai metodi contabili delle imprese e, in particolare, al metodo della partita doppia. Lo scopo essenziale di un sistema di contabilità macroeconomica è quello di classificare la complessa attività economica, di sintetizzarla in un ristretto numero di categorie fondamentali e di esporla in un quadro organico d'insieme rappresentativo dei circuiti economici.
