- In Finnish folklore, an Etiäinen is a spirit sent forth by a shaman or by a person in great distress. It will appear either where the shaman wishes or find the person with whom the sender has the strongest emotional bond. It generally will be able to communicate something, but rarely in any great detail. One possible modern explanation of the phenomenon is that it results from migraine hallucinations. An Etiäinen also means a precognitive vision or dream: someone can, for example, see or hear a family member or a guest coming before the person in question really arrives. Etiäinen always performs exactly similarly as the real person when he comes. One explanation for this is that when one is waiting for someone, imagination can turn the sounds of for example a cat or wind to make it feel like someone is coming, and once the person arrives, the memories of the Etiäinen are easily turned to correspond the sounds that really are made. If no one comes, the "possible etiäinen" is forgotten. The failure of this explanation is that etiäinen is not necessary when you expect someone to come. It more often indicates an unexpected visitor who would otherwise come as a surprise without no phone calls or any kind of announcement beforehand. For people in Lapland etiäinen is a completely normal phenomena. It can be compared to someone knowing it will rain soon. If it's looked at from a biology point of view it can be explained as an instinct that in harsh natural conditions developed in people who really needed it. In the north, people live far away from each other and there are no traffic sounds or noises from a neighbour's apartment. Thus all kind of noises are easier to hear and actually notice. Etiäinen is however not common only for Lapish people but is part of the whole Finnish mythology and tradition. It's a common word also in other parts of Finland and thought to not be anything abnormal but a part of an everyday life.

Tant pot aparèixer on el xamán vol com trobar a la persona que té un lligam afectiu més gran amb el convocador. Generalment podrà donar un missatge, però estranyament amb gaire detall. Un Etiäinen també és una premonició: algú pot, per exemple, veure o sentir un membre de la família o un invitat arribar abans que realment arribi. L'Etiäinen sempre imita a la perfecció el que passarà quan la persona real arribi. Una explicació per això és que quan algú està esperant algú altre, la imaginació pot convertir els sons de per exemple un gat o del vent en el soroll de la persona arribant de manera que ens ho faci veure així, i una vegada aquesta persona arriba, recordem la memòria del Etiäinen i creiem que és una premonició al haver sentit el que passaria. Si ningú ve, el possible Etiäinen és oblidat.

Aparecerá donde el chamán lo desee o encontrará a la persona con la cual el convocador tenga el lazo afectivo más fuerte. Generalmente será capaz de dar un mensaje, pero rara vez con gran detalle. Una posible explicación moderna del fenómeno es que sería el resultado de alucinaciones por migrañas. Etiäinen también significa una visión o un sueño precognitivo: alguien puede, por ejemplo, ver o escuchar un miembro de la familia o un invitado próximo, antes de que la persona realmente llegue. El Etiäinen siempre lleva a cabo lo mismo que hará la persona cuando ésta venga. Una explicación de esto es que cuando uno está esperando a alguien, la imaginación puede convertir los sonidos de, por ejemplo un gato o el viento que se siente, como si alguien llegara, y una vez que la persona llegua, los recuerdos de la Etiäinen son fácilmente convertidos para corresponder o convertirse en sonidos que realmente se hacen. Si nadie viene, la "posible etiäinen" se olvida.
- Etiäinen on kansanuskomusten mukaan etukäteen tapahtuva aistihavainto jonkun henkilön tulemista esimerkiksi pihaan tai taloon ennen kuin henkilö todella tulee. Kokemus toistuu sitten samanlaisena, kun henkilö oikeasti saapuu paikalle. Ihmiset saattavat kuulla esimerkiksi perheenjäsenensä kävelevän pihaan, avaavan oven, jopa nähdä tämän hahmon tai varjon, kunnes huomaavat, ettei tämä todellisuudessa vielä tullutkaan. Pian perheenjäsen kuitenkin tulee ja toistaa saman kuin etiäisensä. Etiäinen on kansanuskomus, jolle ei ole tieteellisiä perusteita. Suomessa etiäiset kuuluvat niin kansanperinteeseen kuin joidenkin arkielämäänkin varsinkin Lapissa. Etiäisiä on selitetty lähinnä psykologian keinoin mm. siten, että kotiintulijaa odottavan ihmisen mielikuvitus voi muokata vaikkapa kissan tai tuulen liikehdintää tai talon narinaa tuntumaan siltä, että joku olisi tulossa. Sitten kun odotettu henkilö piakkoin tulee, odottaja muistaa kokemansa "etiäisen", ja muokkaa vielä muistikuviaan siten, että ne todella vastasivat henkilön saapumisen aiheuttamia ääniä. Jos taas käy niin, että odotettu henkilö ei saavukaan, odottaja unohtaa kokemansa "mahdollisen etiäisen". Itse asiassa toista saapuvaksi kaipaavat saattavat kokea paljonkin sellaisia toiveita herättäviä kokemuksia, jotka myöhemmin voidaan tarvittaessa nähdä etiäisinä.
