The group decided to create a web browser at the suggestion of Robert Cailliau, who was visiting the university, and were supervised by Ari Lemmke. The development of Erwise froze after the students graduated and went on to other projects. Tim Berners-Lee, the creator of the World Wide Web, travelled to Finland to encourage the group to continue with the project. However, none of the project members could afford to continue with the project without proper funding. The name Erwise originates from otherwise and the name of the project group, OHT, which is short for ohjelmatyöryhmä (program working group).

Tim Berners-Lee, el creador de la World Wide Web, viajó a Finlandia para encontrarse con el grupo y continuar el proyecto. Cuando, ninguno de los miembros del proyecto podía continuar el proyecto sin el debido apoyo financiero, Berners-Lee no logró continuar tampoco el trabajo, debido a que todo el código fue escrito en finés. Dando de este modo la base para el projecto Mosaic. En relación al nombre del programa surge como la costumbre cultural de la época de darle nombre recursivo a los proyectos; OHT-Erwise (lease como el ingles 'otherwise', 'otra cosa'. 'otro modo'), donde OHT hace referencia al nombre elegido para grupo del proyectos (OHT, del fines ohjelmatyöryhmä que se traduciria como Grupo de desarrollo de programas); a semejanza del grupo de proyectos de la comunidad GNU.
