Born in Leeds, he started his football career with Tottenham Hotspur before he moved to Bradford City, where he played 19 games and scored six goals. He moved to Leeds United before joining Manchester United in 1922. In 1925, he was transferred to Rotherham United. In 27 matches for Manchester United, he scored 30 goals.
