He scored an own goal in the 18th minute, and then scored the equalizer for the Netherlands in the 50th minute. His teammate Arie Haan eventually scored the winning goal, giving the Netherlands a 2-1 win. Halfway season 2007-2008, Brandts was informed that his contract as head trainer of NAC-Breda would not be extended, despite the best results (3rd, Eredivisie) NAC-Breda has seen for a long time. This decision was not taken lightly by the NAC-Breda supporters, despite all the complaints the NAC-top directors went ahead with their plan. And so Brandts was replaced by Robert Maaskant at the beginning of the 2008-2009 season.

Ernie Brandts blijkt vandaag de dag nog steeds een zwak te hebben voor de Graafschap. Zijn profdebuut maakte hij bij deze ploeg (1974) en speelde er drie seizoenen, voor hij naar PSV vertrok. In die periode scoorde hij drie keer. Internationaal viel hij vooral op tijdens het WK van '78. In de wedstrijd tegen Italië scoorde hij eerst in eigen doel, waarbij hij doelman Piet Schrijvers blesseerde. Later maakte hij zelf de gelijkmaker. Zijn laatste jaar als voetballer keerde hij terug bij de superboeren en sloot daar op 17 januari 1992 zijn carrière af als profvoetballer. In 2005 ging hij aan de slag als voetbaltrainer bij FC Volendam. Met 'De Palingboeren' bereikte Brandts de nacompetitie waarin het in de finalewedstrijd werd uitgeschakeld door NAC Breda. Datzelfde NAC heeft in Brandts de opvolger gevonden voor de ontslagen Cees Lok. Hij tekent bij de Brabanders voor twee jaar, van 2006 tot 2008. Op 29 januari 2008 werd bekend gemaakt dat NAC na het seizoen 2007-2008 niet verder gaat met de oefenmeester. Het zou niet aan de persoonlijkheid van de trainer liggen en niet aan de resultaten. Het zou puur gaan om voetbaltechnische zaken. Robert Maaskant zal vanaf het volgende seizoen zijn opvolger zijn. In juli 2009 vervolgt hij zijn trainersloopbaan bij Rah Ahan FC in Iran.
