Das Konzept überzeugte und aus dem Film wurde eine langjährig erfolgreiche Fernsehserie. Bis zur 8. Staffel ist er einer der Hauptakteure der Serie, bis er sie verlässt. Gerüchten zufolge stieg er aus, weil er die Rolle nur wegen seiner schwarzen Hautfarbe bekommen hatte. Er dementierte dies jedoch. Neben der Schauspielerei ist La Salle noch als Regisseur tätig, z. B. bei der Fernsehserie Twilight Zone in der Episode Memphis, für die er auch das Drehbuch schrieb, und dem Fernsehfilm Rebound: The Legend of Earl 'The Goat' Manigault.
