Il occupait lors du Complot du 20 juillet 1944 contre Adolf Hitler, le poste de Chef des communications aux forces armées. Il a coupé momentanément les communications depuis et vers le Wolfsschanze suite à l'attentat commis par Claus von Stauffenberg. Il transmis également aux autres comploteurs le premier rapport de l'événement. Il fut rapidement arrêté, jugé et condamné à mort.
