- Nell'ambito della biologia e dell'ecologia, il termine ambiente indica tutto ciò con cui un essere vivente entra in contatto influenzandone (in maniera positiva o negativa) il ciclo vitale. L'insieme correlato dell'ambiente e di tutti gli organismi che lo popolano (incluso l'organismo al quale l'ambiente si riferisce) definisce quello che viene detto un "ecosistema". Il termine ambiente viene inoltre utilizzato in senso più ampio non solo in riferimento ad un singolo organismo, bensì a tutti gli organismi che vivono sul pianeta Terra. In questo senso dunque non ci si riferisce più ad una zona circoscritta bensì all'intero pianeta e alle sue particolari caratteristiche che permettono l'esistenza della vita. (it)

- The biophysical environment is the biotic and abiotic surrounding of an organism or population, and consequently includes the factors that have an influence in their survival, development and evolution. The biophysical environment can vary in scale from microscopic to global in extent. It can also be subdivided according to its attributes. Examples include the marine environment, the atmospheric environment and the terrestrial environment. The number of biophysical environments is countless, given that each living organism has its own environment. The term environment is often used as a short form for the biophysical environment, e.g. the UK's Environment Agency. The expression "the environment" often refers to a singular global environment in relation to humanity. (en)
