A third use of "enterprise architecture" is a reference to a business team that uses EA methods to produce architectural descriptions of the structure of an enterprise. A formal definition of the structure of an enterprise comes from the MIT Center for Information Systems Research: Enterprise Architecture is the organizing logic for business processes and IT infrastructure reflecting the integration and standardization requirements of the firm’s operating model. Enterprise Architecture describes enterprise applications and systems with their relationships to enterprise business goals. Another comprehensive definition of enterprise architecture is provided by the IFEAD (Institute for Enterprise Architecture Developments) as: Enterprise Architecture is a complete expression of the enterprise; a master plan which “acts as a collaboration force” between aspects of business planning such as goals, visions, strategies and governance principles; aspects of business operations such as business terms, organization structures, processes and data; aspects of automation such as information systems and databases; and the enabling technological infrastructure of the business such as computers, operating systems and networks. It is often said that the architecture of an enterprise exists, whether it is described explicitly or not. This makes sense if you regard the architecture as existing in the system itself, rather than in a description of it. Certainly, the business practice of enterprise architecture has emerged to make the system structures explicit in abstract architecture descriptions. Practitioners are called "enterprise architects."

Teilweise werden unter der Unternehmensarchitektur nur die Schlüsselprozesse und deren IT Bedürfnisse verstanden. In diesem Fall wird diese vom Top-Management ohne Einbindung der IT erstellt. In diesem Fall ist die Entwicklung der Strategie und der IT Strategie integraler Bestandteil der Unternehmsarchitekturentwicklung. Entgegen ihrer Bezeichnung sind Unternehmensarchitekturen nicht auf Unternehmen beschränkt sondern werden auch von Regierungen und dem Militär genutzt.

  • Enterprise architecture is het vakgebied dat zich bezig houdt met het in samenhang ontwerpen van de organisatie in al haar aspecten. Enterprise architectuur biedt organisaties een kader voor veranderen, neergeslagen in een samenhangende en consistente beschrijving van de gewenste situatie op hoofdlijnen. Deze beschrijving biedt harde en zachte grenzen die de ontwerpruimte op lagere niveaus zodanig in probeert te perken dat de veranderingen in lijn zijn met de doelstellingen van de organisatie als geheel. Enterprise Architectuur geeft daarmee richting en biedt concrete handvatten voor het toetsen van veranderingen. Enterprise architecture wordt dan ook vaak gezien als een belangrijk stuurinstrument.
