At the end of 2004, ELS was acquired by Wiley-Blackwell from the Nature Publishing Group. 2,414 new and updated articles have been added since then. January 2009 has seen the introduction of a new logo and a new and improved homepage for ELS. Articles are written by leaders in the field and cover subjects from areas as diverse as ecology and cell biology. As of December 2008, there are now 4,373 article topics published in ELS online, of which 837 also include updated versions. Full access to ELS requires a subscription, although all article abstracts are available to view and free sample articles are available online. Articles are divided into three categories: Introductory articles: aimed at the level of British university undergraduates, American college freshmen/s and non-specialist readers. Advanced articles: aimed at advanced undergraduates, graduates and researchers. Keynote articles: written from a personal point of view and discuss unique and often controversial topics of special interest in biology.
  • Die Encyclopedia of Life Sciences (Enzyklopädie der Lebenswissenschaften) ist eine Spezialenzyklopädie mit dem Anspruch, das Wissen der Biologie und angrenzender Wissenschaftsdisziplinen umfassend darzustellen. Sie umfasst 26 Bände, von denen die ersten 20 im Jahr 2002 veröffentlicht wurden. Sechs weitere Bände erschienen 2007 als Ergänzungsausgabe und umfassen die Inhalte, die nach dem Erscheinen der ersten 20 Bände zunächst in der seit April 2001 verfügbaren Internet-Ausgabe veröffentlicht worden waren. Der Zugriff auf den Artikelbestand im Internet ist kostenpflichtig. Aktualisierungen und Ergänzungen der Onlineinhalte erfolgen alle zwei bis drei Monate. Die Enzyklopädie enthält auf rund 18.300 Seiten etwa 4.000 Artikel in englischer Sprache. Diese wurden von Fachwissenschaftlern geschrieben und unterlagen vor der Veröffentlichung einer externen Begutachtung durch andere Wissenschaftler (Peer Review). Hinsichtlich des inhaltlichen Anspruchs werden dabei drei Artikelkategorien unterschieden, und zwar Introductory articles (Einführungsartikel), Advanced articles (fortgeschrittene Artikel) für spezielle Themen und Keynote articles (Grundsatzartikel) für kontroverse, neuartige oder aktuelle Themen. Bis 2004 wurde die Enzyklopädie vom Verlag Nature Publishing Group herausgegeben, seitdem erscheint sie beim Verlag John Wiley & Sons.
