The Tucano family of aircraft became one of Embraer's first international marketing successes, with 600 units produced. L'armée de l'air brésilienne a commandé plus de 133 unités de cet appareil. Il équipe également la patrouille de voltige "Esquadrilha da Fumaça", équivalent brésilien de la Patrouille de France. Aujourd'hui il y a plus de 600 avions livrés. Il a été vendu entre autres à : Argentine : 30; Égypte : 134 + 10 fabriqués sous licence par les Arsenaux égyptiens; Honduras : 12; Iran : 25; Paraguay : 5; Pérou : 30 (dont 8 ont été revendus à l'Angola); Venezuela : 31; Colombie : 14 . Le succès de cet avion fut tellement grand que la Grande-Bretagne le choisit pour être fabriqué sous licence par Shorts à Belfast en y adaptant une turbine Garret à la place de la turbine Pratt & Whitney ainsi que des équipements de bord spécifiques. 130 y furent construits. Cette version a été vendue également au Kenya (12) et au Koweït (16).
