The Embeddable Linux Kernel Subset (ELKS) is a Unix-like operating system kernel that can run on Intel 8086-compatible microprocessors. ELKS, formerly known as Linux-8086, is a small subset of Linux and can run on machines with limited processor and memory resources, including machines with 16-bit microprocessors that are not supported by Linux.   • ELKS, kurz für Embeddable Linux Kernel Subset ist ein freies Betriebssystem für ältere PCs, die mit x86-kompatiblen 16bit-Prozessoren ausgestattet sind. Da Linux als Prozessor mindestens einen 80386 benötigt, ist es auf x86-kompatiblen 16bit-Prozessoren nicht lauffähig. Hinzu kommt, dass die überwiegende Menge älterer PCs mit sehr wenig Hauptspeicher ausgerüstet ist. ELKS ist demzufolge eine auf diese Bedingungen angepasste Untermenge des Linux-Kernels, mit dem Ziel Unix V7-Funktionalität zu bieten. Ein solcher Kernel kann in embedded systems, Rechnern in Entwicklungsländern sowie zu Ausbildungs- und Lehrzwecken genutzt werden. ELKS läuft ebenfalls auf Psion SIBO-Organizern.

Cílem projektu je vytvořit kernel pro: IBM a kompatibilní osobní počítače s procesory Intel 8086 a Intel 80286 PDA, např. Psion SiBO monolitické mikropočítače embedded controller systémy V současné době běží na různých PC kompatibilních s IBM. Na této architektuře potřebuje obraz linuxového jádra (kernel image) zhruba 200 KB a plně bežící operační systém by měl mít potřebu mezi 400 KB a 512 KB. Dále ELKS beží na Psion SiBO. Zatím není veřejně známa verze pro jiné architektury. ELKS podporuje Internet Protokol verze 4.
  • ELKS (Embeddable Linux Kernel Subset - Wbudowany Podzbiór Kernela Linuksowego), znany też pod nazwą Linux-8086 - minidystrybucja systemu operacyjnego Linux przeznaczona dla systemów wbudowanych i staszych modeli komputerów z rodziny x86. Faktycznie ELKS stanowi podzbiór systemu Linux - oferuje więc znacznie ograniczoną liczbę funkcji lecz pozostaje jest zgodny z UNIX/Linux. W odróżnieniu od Linuksa, który jest przeznaczony na procesory od serii 80386 wzwyż, ELKS działa również na procesorach 16-bitowych nie wspieranych przez Linux. System nadaje się do zastosowania na małych komputerach z ograniczoną mocą obliczeniową i pamięcią. ELKS jest otwartym oprogramowaniem dostępnym pod licencją GPL. Dzięki możliwości zintegrowania Nano-X Window System można uruchomić ELKS z graficznym interfejsem użytkownika. Po dłuższej przerwie projekt został reaktywowany w roku 2006 i system ELKS obecnie działa na komputerach zgodnych z x86 oraz na palmtopach firmy Psion. ELKS został użyty jako baza dla systemu czasu rzeczywistego FlightLinux przeznaczonego dla wahadłowców kosmicznych i satelitów NASA.
