Les premiers travaux de l'église dans sa forme actuelle, commencèrent en 1083 sous la direction de l'abbé Simeon. L'église fut consacrée cathédrale en 1109. Ensuite, pendant près de 400 ans, elle fut à la fois église du monastère bénédictin et cathédrale. Depuis la dissolution des monastères par le roi Henri VIII, elle n'existe plus qu'en tant que cathédrale. Architecturalement, la cathédrale présente deux particularités. La première est l'Octogone, construit en remplacement de la tour centrale normande, qui s'effondra en 1322 : ces quelque 200 tonnes de bois, de plomb et de verre supportés par huit piliers et donnant l'impression d'être suspendus dans l'espace sont, depuis, la fierté d'Ely. La deuxième est la chapelle de la Vierge (Lady Chapel) qui est la plus grande chapelle lui étant consacrée en Angleterre.
