Ella Maillart was a French speaking Swiss adventurer and travel writer, as well as a sportswoman. She had been captain of the Swiss Women's ice hockey team and was an international skier. She also competed in the 1924 Summer Olympics as sailor in the Olympic monotype competition. She spent decades exploring oriental republics of the USSR during the Stalin period and published a rich series of books considered today as valuable historical testimonies.

Etter returen til Europa i 1946 slo hun seg igjen ned i Genf og Chandolin. Hun fortsatte med skrivearbeidet og arbeidet som reiseleder på turer til Tibet og andre asiatiske land. I 1989 donerte hun sitt fotoarkiv med 16 000 bilder til Musée de l’Elysée i Lausanne.
