Elisabeth of Romania was the Queen Consort of King George II of Greece. She was the daughter of King Ferdinand I of Romania and his wife, Marie of Edinburgh. Her full birth name was Elisabetha Charlotte Josephine Alexandra Victoria. She was born in the Peleş Castle. On 27 February 1921, she married the future King George, then Crown Prince, in Bucharest. She was queen consort from 1922 to 1923, and afterwards the couple lived in exile.

  • Elisabeth of Romania was the Queen Consort of King George II of Greece. She was the daughter of King Ferdinand I of Romania and his wife, Marie of Edinburgh. Her full birth name was Elisabetha Charlotte Josephine Alexandra Victoria. She was born in the Peleş Castle. On 27 February 1921, she married the future King George, then Crown Prince, in Bucharest. She was queen consort from 1922 to 1923, and afterwards the couple lived in exile. The marriage was unsuccessful, and they were divorced on 6 July, 1935. George was restored to his throne on 3 November, 1935. Elisabeth then returned to live in Romania until its monarchy was abolished after World War II. She had numerous affairs, including one before her marriage with Frank Rattigan, father of playwright Terence Rattigan. which resulted in his being expelled from the diplomatic service. She died in Cannes, France in 1956. She was once quoted as saying: "I've committed every vice in my life except murder, and I don't want to die without doing that too."

Creà junt amb els soviètics un holding d'empreses dedicades a la compra de propietats rurals. L'any 1948 amb la caiguda de la monarquia fugí de Romania i s'establí a Cannes. On morí el 1956 acompanyada del seu amant a qui havia titulat príncep de Hohenzollern.

Tras el ascenso del fascismo al gobierno, Carol II fue forzado a abdicar en su hijo Miguel en 1940. La princesa Isabel pasó entonces a conspirar con los comunistas contra el nuevo rey. En 1944 el rey Miguel expulsó a los fascistas del gobierno. Pero, Isabel continuó conspirando contra él con los comunistas. Acabada la Segunda Guerra Mundial, los comunistas alcanzaron el gobierno y la monarquía fue sustituida por una República Popular en 1947. Tras ser obligada a ceder todas sus propiedades al Estado, en 1948 Isabel fue expulsada del país. Falleció en Cannes en 1956. Se asegura que una de sus frases favoritas era: "He cometido todo los vicios posibles en mi vida excepto el asesinato, y no voy a esperar a morirme sin haberlo hecho".
